Judge: Michael Schlicting When it comes to art, Michael Schlicting is out of touch with reality. What he is in touch with is the visceral emotion that a scene evokes. Mood, feeling and universal longing are the subjects of his art rather than literal, physical realism. He incorporates into his paintings personal symbols and his reaction to his environment, be it the Oregon coastline or foreign alleyways. In his images, Schlicting  vividly demonstrates it is not what you see that counts, but what you sense. It is this probing, intuitive exploration that has given Schlicting’s art a deeper level of meaning, and in the process, gained him national distinction.

Michael grew up in Neskowin, Oregon and returned  to start his art career and open the Hawk Creek Gallery. An award winning painter for over thirty years,  Schlicting is a signature member and Dolphin Fellow of the American Watercolor Society in New York City. National awards include top honors from the American Watercolor Society  and the National Watercolor Society as well as many other juried exhibitions around the country. His paintings have been published in numerous books and magazines.  He is in demand as a juror and workshop instructor. He has over 2500 paintings in public, corporate and private collections worldwide.
