IF I COULD CATCH A RAINBOW

If I could catch a rainbow
I would do it just for you
and share with you its beauty
On the days you're feeling blue.

If I could build a mountain
You could call your very own;
A place to find serenity,
A place to be alone.

If I could take your troubles
I would toss them in the sea,
But all these things I'm finding
are impossible for me.

I cannot build a mountain
Or catch a rainbow fair,
But let me be what I know best,
A friend who's always there.

Sandra Lewis Pringle

Almost all artists like to collect artwork that they admire.  Here is a website that sells only art and craft items.  It is set up very similar to eBay.  If you know how to upload images of your artwork to the web, this would be a great place for you to offer your artwork for sale.  The website does not charge anything for listing and/or selling your artwork at the time that I am writing this message.  This is a fairly new site, and the traffic to it is not as great as the traffic to eBay.  But help pass the word about it.

IT'S NOT TO LATE TO REGISTER FOR THIS GREAT WORKSHOP!!
Figurative and portrait artist, Bill Kalwick’s first art instructor was his late father who had studied with Lajos Markos. Bill also attended the
Arts Student League in New York. Upon completing his studies in New York
he moved to Houston, where he still lives and works, to become the protégé of Lajos Markos. Kalwick’s vivid palette and impressionistic style combine beautifully to showcase his largely South American and European subject matter.
He is also a highly sought after commission portrait artist.

This workshop will consist of models, still life and landscape...
We look forward to seeing you!!

CLOUDCROFT ART WORKSHOPS
Carolyn Sharp has written to me as follow:

I am with the Cloudcroft Art Workshops considered one of New Mexico's top art workshops, and is located in Cloudcroft, NM, a small village at 9000 ft. in the cool Sacramento Mtns. Every year we invite well known artists from around the US to come and teach workshops for us.  These are week long and go from 9-4 daily.  We have an exciting line up for this summer which you can find at www.cloudcroftart.com The workshops present many mediums: oil, watercolor, mixed media, watermedia, pastel, colored pencil, acrylic, ect.

I am mainly wanting to tell you about the workshop we have with well known artist Mary Ann Beckwith who will teach in watermedia and other materials.  Our brochure states: "Your energy-filled days will explore creative methods of watermedia application, including building layers, texturing and collage.  Participants will be exposed to new techniques and materials that will allow them to better express their visions and ideas through painting and collage.  Methods and materials will be suitable for both representational and abstract imagery.  Demos will focus on composition and design, how to recharge your work, sources of inspiration and the business of being an artist.  Each day will include plenty of time for painting and optional critiques.  Mary Ann has a full workshop schedule throughout the United States.  It will be an art-altering experience!"

If any of your members would like to come check out the website for more information.  If any would like to receive our brochure just email me, Carolyn Sharp at 2sharps@pvtnetworks.net and I will put them on our list for next year.  We send out brochures in January.

www.artperk.com
(Gaithersburg, MD) – The owners of DoubleShot Studio today announced the launch of ArtPerk - www.ArtPerk.com - a new website for artists seeking to locate display opportunities and gallery openings.  ArtPerk lists opportunities throughout the nation and offers unique features to help artists find show opportunities in a quick, user-friendly way.

Artists seeking shows to enter now have the ability to search for opportunities by media (nice for sculptors and photographers, sometimes not allowed in juried shows), by location (if you’re partial to show your work only near your home), and other search parameters.

ArtPerk also allows users to save their searches and receive daily or weekly e-mails with those search results as reminders.  The site is free for artists to search and for galleries and venues to post.  Galleries can create listings for a fee if they’d like front page placement and other advantages.

“We wanted to create a place where artists of any media can come, and quickly find shows and display opportunities open to their work,” said Missy Loewe, co-creator of the site.  “It also had to have the ability for people to save these searches and receive e-mail reminders.  ArtPerk will revolutionize the way artists search for opportunities, so they won’t spend five minutes reading about a show, then find in the last line of the description that their media type is not allowed.”

The owners of the site will add new features weekly, including new types of opportunities such as jobs and residencies for artists, and articles on business and marketing.

Based in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, ArtPerk is owned by the photographers and web design specialists at DoubleShot Studio, LLC of Gaithersburg, MD and is located on the Internet at www.ArtPerk.com.

Here is a message from Susan Sorrell about online classes.

Happy Spring Chicken!!

Hello to all of my creative friends out there in art land!! I hope everyone is getting ready for some warm fresh weather and thawing out from the Winter months. (Except all of my students who are "down under", who are approaching Winter.) Cool I am working on the yard at the studio and have been raking leaves and planting shrubs and flowers. Now if I can get the squirrels to stop digging in my planters and killing my flowers!! WEBSITES OF INTEREST

www.artbyus.com
Almost all artists like to collect artwork that they admire.  Here is a website that sells only art and craft items.  It is set up very similar to eBay.  If you know how to upload images of your artwork to the web, this would be a great place for you to offer your artwork for sale.  The website does not charge anything for listing and/or selling your artwork at the time that I am writing this message.  This is a fairly new site, and the traffic to it is not as great as the traffic to eBay.  But help pass the word about it.

www.smartflix.com
You can rent DVDs from them on almost any subject, including art instruction DVDs.  One was even a DVD on how to make motorcycle gas tanks.

www.myamericanartist.com
You can subscribe to the American Artist e-Newsletter from this site.

www.etsy.com  This is another site where you can sell your artwork.  There is a small charge for listing your work.

www.cafepress.com   You should check out this site if your artwork is suitable for printing on coffee mugs, T-shirts, etc.

www.ebay.com   If you are not a member of eBay, you can sign in as a guest.  It is fun to search out ACEO (this stands for Art Cards Editions and Originals -- which is basically an ATC).  Also search for SFA which stands for Small Format Art.  Also check out art squared which is art in a squared format -- usually 4" x 4"

www.painterskeys.com  You can sign up for Robert Genn's twice weekly newsletter.  This is an interesting and informative site as well as his newsletters are informative and inspirational.

www.artnewsusa.com  Information about current news in the art world.

www.artpickle.com  This is a site where you can post your art work.  I think it is free for a short period of time.  Interesting site to just browse around.

www.artcalendar.com   This is a site where you can sign up to receive their interesting and informative newsletter.

www.ccpvideos.com  This is a site where you can sign up to receive newsletters and to hear about new art instruction DVDs.  Owning one of the DVDs is just like taking a workshop in your own home at your own convenience.  They also sponsor online art shows.

You can subscribe to the American Artist e-Newsletter from this site.

www.cafepress.com   You should check out this site if your artwork is suitable for printing on coffee mugs, T-shirts, etc.

www.ebay.com   If you are not a member of eBay, you can sign in as a guest.

JEAN WEINER
Jean recently taught a workshop in Monticello, Florida.  Jean says "
I learned from this experience, that I really enjoy teaching and seeing others gain new skills that will help them with this medium as they develop their own painting styles.

I have agreed to conduct a one day watercolor workshop at the Georgia National Fair on Thursday, October 11, from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. I will also be an "artist in residence" at the fair from Oct. 12 - 14. If you attend during that time, I hope you will stop by my booth in the Miller-Murphy-Howard building and say, "hello." I'll be painting!

I have also just agreed to teach watercolor classes this fall at Darton College in their Continuing Education Department. Classes meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Check my web-site for the dates, description and details.

My painting, "Snowy Egret" has been accepted into this fall's Tallahassee Watercolor Society Brush Strokes member show. This year's show will be held at the Gadsden Art Center in Quincy, FL. The show runs from Sept. 14 - Oct. 27.

I am thrilled to join the board of the Southern Watercolor Society as their 2007 - 2008 treasurer. This society boasts members from 18 states across the southeast. Have a look:
http://www.southernwatercolorsociety.org/SWBoard.html . What a boost to work with such talented and committed watercolor artists in a broader region!"

ARTIST COLONY ONLINE EXHIBITION

Artist Colony, a division of Creative Computer Services of Gulf Breeze, LLC, together with contributors, is sponsoring its Second Online Exhibition.  For those of you unfamiliar with online exhibitions, it means that your artwork is judged for awards, but you do not have to frame or ship your artwork.  The images will remain on the Internet for public viewing.  You can submit images as attachments to an e-mail or by slides or photos of your artwork.

Read all about it at:

http://www.artistcolony.net/2007exhibition/index.htm

If you have been considering having your own website in the art community at www.artistcolony.net, now is the time to do it.  If you join Artist Colony and enter the online exhibition, the fee is discounted to Eighty Dollars ($80.00) which covers your first year in the Artist Colony art community and your entry fee in the online exhibition.  This is a savings of $10.00.  If you have any questions concerning this, contact either Pat at captpj28@aol.com or Nanette at nanetteljones@bellsouth.net

SCAMS DIRECTED AT ARTISTS

Although scams directed at artists have been mentioned before, the scammers must really be busy as we have received two reports this month from artists who almost got caught in the scam.  The scenario is something similar to this.  An artist receives an email from someone they don't know indicating they want to buy one or more paintings which they have viewed on his/her website.  Then they indicate that they are moving (or in some cases, they are trying to get money sent to a relative in a foreign country) and they want to send a check to you for more money than what you are asking for the paintings and they will send someone by to pick up a check from you for the difference.  This scenario may vary from one scammer to another -- they want to give you a check (which your bank will tell you is not a valid check) but the scammers hope to get a check from you before you learn that the check they gave to you is no good.

There are many other scams going around -- scams purported to come from eBay, PayPal and various banking institutions.  DO NOT REPLY TO THOSE MESSAGES.  If you get one purportedly coming from eBay or PayPal, you can forward the message to:  spoof@ebay.com or to spoof@paypal.com and they will make an effort to track down the computer from which the message was sent and to stop the person sending the messages.

SLIDES FROM DIGITAL IMAGES

JAMES H. STEPHENS, GEORGIA, has offered the following suggestion to everyone. This is great news. Thanks, James!

___________________________

"With all the national shows coming up, I wanted to remind you that you can get slides of your paintings directly from your digital images. And it's fairly cheap. Here's how:

Use your digital camera to take a high-resolution picture of your painting. This is best done before you put it under glass. If the painting is small, you can scan it.
(optional) Use a photo editing program to crop the images and eliminate the background.
Put the images into your computer. You can do this with your memory card or with a cable. You should already know how to do this.
Email the images to the company listed below. Then, wait a week or so for the slides to be delivered to your door.
Last week, I emailed five images to the company. I had two slides made from each picture, for a total of 10 slides. I use the economy shipping (It's about one dollar.). The total price for five originals and five duplicates, is just $23.50. That's $2.35 per slide, and it includes the shipping cost. The slides were back in my hands in a bit more than a week. Now I can submit something to some upcoming National shows.

The best part is that I never have to leave the house, and the slides are much better than those I used to make with my film camera. All the masking is done for you, so there's no taping and no clipped edges.

One step I add is reviewing the images with Adobe Photoshop. I sometimes adjust the brightness and contrast before sending them.

Here's the company name and the link to their Website:

Slides.com

http://slides.com/imagingservices.html

Best wishes.
James"

BOOKS FOR SALE FROM NANETTE'S LIBRARY

As most of you know, Pat and I moved from Gulf Breeze, Florida in May.  We bought our own place in Milton, Florida.  In moving, I learned that I have more books than I have room for.  Below is a list of the ones I would be willing to part with at this time.  I enjoy all of my books, but there is a limit to how many two large bookcases will hold, so I am going to have to part with some of them.

You can rent DVDs from them on almost any subject, including art instruction DVDs.  One was even a DVD on how to make motorcycle gas tanks.
